CHAPTER 17

Cameron

“MORNING, GREY,” HUNTER SAID, as he placed his revolver in the gun safe on the ninth floor of St. Christina’s Hospital.

“Hunter, how’s it going?” Grey asked, as he routinely patted Hunter down. “Here to visit our resident doctor again?”

“Yes, sir. Anything new around here?”

“Same shit, new day. You know how it goes…which patient attacked who first, who dumped all their food on the floor, who’s moaning and shrieking…. Sometimes it’s like a bizarro world circus in here and all the clowns are deranged. You know what I mean?”

Hunter nodded, even though he could only imagine what St. C’s was really like on a daily basis. “I guess you get used to it?”

“Yeah, some of it, but sometimes they spook me a little, especially the ones who hallucinate. That shit freaks me out.” Grey nodded to Petey Johnson, who was watching the camera feeds. “Hey, Pete, open her up.” Petey pressed a button and a loud buzzer sounded, indicating the door had unlocked. Grey led the way down the too-bright corridor to where Cameron waited in a conference room.

Hunter looked up at the endless rows of bright lighting fixtures embedded in the ceiling. “Are those fluorescents?”

“Huh?” Grey’s eyes followed Hunter’s. “I don’t know, man. That’s maintenance’s job, not mine.” Grey unlocked the dark brown door to the conference room and stepped to the side, giving Hunter room to pass. “Give me the signal when you’re done and Petey’ll come down and let you out.” He closed the door firmly and locked it again.

Hunter smiled at Cameron. “He’s a little testy today. Things not good here at St. Christina’s?”

“Ah, ignore him. A couple of patients got into it yesterday and when he intervened, he got clobbered. He’ll get over it, eventually. Come, sit.” Cameron patted the mahogany table in front of her and smiled happily.

Hunter slipped off his navy peacoat, threw it on the chair next to him, and sat across from Cam.

“No Levine again?” she asked.

“Nope.”

“I think he doesn’t enjoy coming here and visiting me,” she said with a grin.

“I’m sure it doesn’t bother you, right?”

“Well, I suppose it might hurt my feelings, but it doesn’t.” She smiled. “I have Sylvie all warmed up and ready for action. What’s on the agenda today?”

“I wanted to catch you up on our plans for The Choker. Day thirty-two is fast approaching, and we have the piers covered from top to bottom. We set up a series of new cameras along each pier, along the sidewalks, inside the soccer field, the basketball court, on The Great Lawn, which was a challenge, and throughout the dog park. They’re state-of-the-art CCTV with high-resolution night vision. You can see what color eyes a mouse has with these things. They’re high, they’re low, they’re at eye level. The tech guys did an amazing job planting these things. Some look like rocks, and they actually embedded others into trees. No wires—they run on rechargeable batteries. They’re all connected to our phones, so we can pull up live feed anytime, anyplace.
